Teamwork

Teaching Idea: Teamwork

I talked to the players on my team this past week about my favorite part of basketball.  I had them try and guess between dunking from the free throw line (not that I can actually do that), shooting a 3 point shot from 5 feet beyond the arc, blocking someone's shot into the bleachers or making a great pass to an open teammate.

Of course after you describe those possibilities they start salivating over the dunking or shooting or whatever because their natural tendency is going to be thinking about themselves.  Then I throw them for a loop.  I tell them that my favorite part of the game is seeing an open teammate and making a great pass for easy two points.  I enjoy that more than any of the other possibilities.  That is my favorite part of the game.

But in order to enjoy the game that much you have first be willing and able to give up the personal glory of scoring all of the points.  That's when their look changes.  Because it's hard to do that.  I ask them to imagine another teammate getting 20 points off of 10 great passes from them.  Are they OK with that.  That's where teamwork starts, be willing to do whatever it takes for the team to be successful.

Teamwork is all about each individual on the team working together to win the game.

People in general love watching a team that players together.
